A cholesterol test helps to determine your risk of plaque build-up in your arteries which contributes to narrowed or blocked arteries throughout your body, namely atherosclerosis. High cholesterol levels usually don’t cause any signs or symptoms, so a cholesterol test is a very important and necessary tool as high cholesterol is often a significant risk factor for heart disease.
A complete cholesterol test, includes the calculation of four types of fats (lipids) in your blood, namely total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Cholesterol testing is especially important if you have a family history of high cholesterol or heart disease, are currently overweight and sedentary, have been diagnosed with diabetes, consume a high-fat diet and are male 45yrs+ or female 55yrs+. These factors put you at increased risk of developing high cholesterol and heart disease so it’s important to get your cholesterol checked!
If you have high cholesterol levels, your doctor may want you to get tested more often so ensure to check with your GP how often you should have a cholesterol test, if your cholesterol levels are elevated.
